Labor Day Facts
- Labor Day is the first Monday in September
- Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States
- Labor Day in many countries is celebrated as May Day or International Workers Day (May 1), which was originally spawned by Europe’s proletariat movement, largely inspired by Communism. In 1958, President Eisenhower designated May 1st as both Law Day and Loyalty Day. Each of these were specifically aimed at replacing the communist holiday with a religious or patriotic one.
- Parade Roots – The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday which was a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit and de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.
Most organizations or small businesses are normally not working on Labor Day so it is nice to have some way to wish your employees a Happy Labor Day before the holiday.
