Labor Day History
Labor Day has become recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but also as the unofficial end of summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.
Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union celebrated the 2nd Labor Day holiday just a year later on September 5, 1883.
The first Monday in September was selected as the Labor Day holiday in 1884, as was originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date.
Labor Day is the first Monday in September. It is also a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and the well-being of our beautiful country.
